Ferdinand the Bull in the Arena

The board game features characters from the Walt Disney cartoon “Ferdinand the Bull” (1938).

The game is based on draughts/checkers. The board has 33 round holes where the marbles can be placed. The players take turns to move their marbles around the board. The marbles represent Ferdinand, his mother and picadores (mounted horsemen who use a lance to jab the bull in a bull fight).

The board is decorated with cartoon depictions of characters, including Ferdinand the Bull, a matador, a picadore and another man riding a horse while blowing a trumpet.

The box features a cartoon depiction of Ferdinand the Bull sitting in the centre of a bullring smelling a flower, while an irate matador tries to make him fight. The inside of the lid is printed with game instructions for two different games that can be played on the board.

“Ferdinand the Bull” was based on the the children’s book “The Story of Ferdinand” (1936) by the American author Munro Leaf, with illustrations by Robert Lawson. The book’s title character was a bull who refused to fight in the bullring, preferring to sit down and smell flowers instead.
