Science in Toys

Calling all budding scientists to MINT Museum of Toys! Want to know all the different ways of what makes a toy tick, without the use of modern technology? Embark on a journey of scientific discovery this April!

Join us on an exclusive tour focusing on the science behind toys from the 1930s to the 1960s. Whether they function on gears, springs, or battery, our vintage toys are perfect miniature examples of the use of science to generate energy, making the toys come to life. Come discover the makings of different toys and the ingenious minds behind their creation, as well as learn how some of these technologies are applicable even today! At the end of the tour, Make & Play features a workshop and a BONUS secret experimental challenge for only the best young scientists!

Programme

Participants will go on a tour of the museum, highlighting various toys that are powered by different actions. Look out for the Ballet Dancers toy that activates through a blowing action, and a tin drummer-boy Mickey Mouse that beats his drum using a spring mechanism.

At the end of the tour, take part in our workshop to make your very own fingertip gyroscope, also commonly known these days as a fidget spinner. Learn the science behind gyroscopes and what makes them turn, then stay on for a special extra experiment to bring not just one, but two DIY toys home!

Who may attend?

This programme is recommended for families with children aged 6 – 12 years old.

What will your child learn?

Science in Toys aims to show children a world of toys beyond the screen!

Children will learn about how toys used to function back in the day and explore all the different physics and mechanisms that master toymakers applied to their craft. Through learning the intricacies of toys, children will learn to appreciate the workmanship of their playthings and maybe even use what they learn to dream up toy designs of their own! Sign up now and turn your kids into little scientists today!
