The Cultural Decade

The Cultural Decade – is a period of great significance in history. Lasting from 1963 – 1972, this is the decade that gave us such icons as The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Andy Warhol across different fields. Known as the decade of experimentation, the Swinging Sixties also opened the world to new cultural movements, new technology, and most importantly, new toys. With the explosion in both culture and population, the latter known colloquially as the Baby Boom, it is no wonder that there comes lots of source materials for toy productions. Coupled with the rapidly improving technologies, it is no wonder that the 60s produced our most popular toys: Easy Bake Ovens, GI Joe, Twister and many more. While in the 1960s, toys in the west mostly focused on space travel as a result of the Space Race and subsequent moon landing, Asian countries – led by Japan who has leapfrogged Germany as one of the leading toy producers in the world – started producing more complex toys unique to the region’s culture. Making up the other two corners of the Golden Triangle would be China and Hong Kong.
