Exhibition: Imaginaire: Of Smaller Memories and Greater Dreams
Marking a special milestone as the museum’s first exhibition showcased outside its premises in Singapore – Imaginaire: Of Smaller Memories and Greater Dreams invites visitors to rediscover the world of French childhood through toys that shaped it across the 20th century. This captivating exhibition offers a chronological exploration of how toys reflect the shifting hopes, values and fantasies of growing up in a changing world.
From intricate creations such as a Ba-Ta-Clan New Chinese Game made in 1900s based on French theatre The Bataclan, traditional classic games like Jeu de Loto from 20th Century to mass-produced lithographed tin icons such as a Char de L’Space tank toy from the post-war boom, the exhibition structures the French-made toy collection from the museum into 4 main zones: Circus, Travel, Companionship and Heros.
Visitors will go on a journey where toys transport young minds to magical circuses, travel to distant lands, or even the stars. Dolls, plush animals, and board games open windows into the emotional world of companionship, while objects that let children imagine themselves as explorers, adventurers, or heroes invite them to shape their own stories.
More than just a nostalgic journey, IMAGINAIRE is a cultural reflection on how play helps shape who we are as individuals and societies. Whether you’re revisiting your own childhood memories or introducing the next generation to the toys of the past, this exhibition invites all ages to connect, reflect, and dream.
